DEVOTION: WHAT IS TRUTH?
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but it’s end is the way of destruction.
This is a question that has had men and women throughout the ages pondering and studying for an answer. Pontius Pilot questioned Jesus as He stood before him, “What is truth?” (John 18:38). Truth is not a matter of someone’s opinion, feelings or beliefs. It is defined as conformity with fact, agreement with a standard or rule, an established or verified fact. There must be a standard by which we go by. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” There is One who knows it because He created it. If we believe that the Bible is God-breathed and inspired, then this is our truth. This is our standard-no compromise. There are many theories and opinions from very intelligent sources, but can we trust them? The One source that is sovereign and unchanging is God and His Word. The Bible has been torn apart by scholars to disprove it’s authenticity but they have not been successful. The truth is that sometimes we don’t like or want the truth. Maybe like Jack Nicholson’s quote in the old movie, “A Few Good Men”, we can’t handle the truth, so we ignore it or alter it to suit ourselves. God knows our beginning and our end and everything in-between. He wants a happy ending for us and an abundant life now so let’s gird our waists with truth as Ephesians instructs and live by the standards of the Word from Genesis to Revelation.
Matthew 3:2 says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of purpose and action. Repent and surrender to Jesus today. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
